Oracle Decks

Earthly Souls and Spirits Moon Oracle

I have a few art crushes and Terri Foss’s artwork is definitely one of them. Her process reels on Instagram captivate me. However, since I go through phases with oracle cards, it took me way longer than it should have to purchase Earthly Souls and Spirits Moon Oracle.

Holding these cards in my hands was even better than I expected. So much so that I went straight on to Terri Foss’s Etsy store with the intention of purchasing one of her prints. Unfortunately she doesn’t ship to Australia. If you like this deck though and you live in the USA or Canada then it is worth checking out her store. Her prices are very reasonable.

The Earthly Souls and Spirits Moon Oracle Deck

Earthly Souls and Spirits Moon Oracle is a 55 card deck that features beautifully rendered witches, cats, wolves, ravens, owls and foxes. Since the texture of the canvas shows through on some cards I picture Terri sitting in her studio drawing inspiration from the world outside her window. This grounds the otherworldly nature of these cards and reminds us that magic exists all around us. We just need to look.

The muted colour palette works perfectly with the energy of the deck. Earthly Souls and Spirits Moon Oracle is quite a mouthful. But the cards themselves are celestial yet grounded, soulful and deep yet relaxing and joyous. Terri Foss’s art style, the colouring, and the keywords come together so well. The result is a nurturing deck that helps you find/regain a sense of harmony and hope. Sometimes this is all we really need – faith in ourselves and our ability to keep going when we’ve lost our way and life feels overwhelming.

My first experience with the cards

On the day the Earthly Souls and Spirits Moon Oracle arrived I’d been questioning myself about whether, in a certain situation, I was doing too much or not enough. I had come down, with a little trepidation, on the too much side. Then, the first spread I did, purely with the intention of seeing what the cards looked like laid out in a spread, confirmed everything for me.

There, overseeing the spread was “Clarity.” As soon as I saw that I knew an answer was coming. I wasn’t disappointed.

In the book she assigns a quote to each card. The one for “Clarity” reads, “Clarity and simplicity are the antidotes to complexity and uncertainty,” and just like that I felt a sense of peace and trust. Plus, it confirmed that there is no such thing as a random spread. I also wondered why I don’t work with oracle cards more.

The cardstock

Measuring 7.5cm x 13.5cm the cards are slightly longer than standard tarot size, but on the smaller size in comparison to many oracle cards. With flexible cardstock and a satin finish, they are easy to flip through and fan and as long as you can get your hands around them they are great to shuffle.

Discussions on some individual cards

I took a different approach to the pairings for this review. Rather than a conscious pairing, I just drew two cards to see what messages wanted to come through. Straight up, I noticed the fox.

In my recent review for Wild Reflections Tarot I wrote about how often I’d been seeing foxes of late and bam here is another one on the first card. There’s no denying there is a message here for me. It inspired me go back to a post I’d written a long time ago that featured The Magician from Animal Totem Tarot. I wanted to see if there was a link. The short answer – yes. I think it’s time for me to learn more about foxes. But for now I’ll work with what I’ve got in front of me.

Joyous & Harmony

Here I notice that she isn’t looking at the fox. Also, the card is titled “Joyous” but the image doesn’t give me that energy. It makes me think she’s looking in the wrong place. There’s some misdirection going on. Connecting that back to The Magician article about manifestation suggest I have something to think about.

Add in that the fox’s colouring and the colour choice for the base of the “Harmony” card are the same and it suggests the need to be aware of what’s going on in our lived experience. If we get too caught up in our spiritual pursuits we can miss the joy in our everyday lives. In the book, the Carlos Santana quote for “Joyous” reads “If you carry joy in your hearth you can heal any moment.” The overall message – balancing my various pursuits rather than prioritising one in particular is more likely to bring a sense of harmony and joy.

Prosperity and Compassion

The first thing I noticed was that pumpkins feature on both cards. This initially felt like a fairly straight forward message about the need to share your prosperity with others.

But that led to me thinking about what I consider to be one of our greatest assets – our time. Rather than focusing purely on accumulation, there is a need to make sure we take the time to be there for each other. How often do we struggle to find the time to catch up with those we care about? This begs the question, “Do we pay too high a price for our “success”?” I’m attending a funeral in two days time so this is no doubt influencing my thinking.

The lady on the Prosperity card is alone: the one on Compassion is sitting with her cat. How you interpret that is up to you.

Peace & Infinity

Normally I would expect to see the face on the moon in the lit section. Here it is on the dark.

This suggests to me that when you make peace with your shadow you can become comfortable with its presence. Doing so can change how we see both ourselves and others.

Combining the images of the witch and the wolf walking towards the moon and the raven and the keyword “Infinity” reminds that this is an ongoing process. We need to make peace with this also. As I kept looking at the card I noticed another face start to appear in the moon and the word growth came to mind. This is how we grow.

Confidence & Mindful

On the “Confidence” card she sits alone surrounded by her cats. Initially I thought, “Be confident in who you are and in your intuitive hits.” The ground beneath her looks solid but there is something ethereal about her. This image appears on the box but there the colouring is stronger and a raven flies towards her.

Maybe she has lost her shine and that is why I sense sadness in her expression. Have others not shared her confidence in her beliefs? her approach? her direction?

The message then was to be mindful not to let others dim your confidence. The place she is sitting rises above the mists. She has reached the summit. She needs to remember that not everyone will come on the journey with her and that’s okay.

On the “Mindful” card it is the position of the broom that draws me attention.

Two things come to mind. Firstly don’t lower the bar and thus yourself to make other feel more comfortable. And secondly, if she is offering the cat a ride and it chooses not to jump on then that’s fine. Not everyone will come on the journey, but that’s okay. The right people will either follow her lead or cheer her on. She needs to be mindful of that so that she can maintain her self-confidence through the difficult periods.

The Earthly Souls and Spirits Moon Oracle Guidebook

Now onto the book. The Earthly Souls and Spirits Moon Oracle comes with a 131 paged, card-sized guidebook. It opens with a brief introduction then it launches straight into the card meanings. Since the cards are not numbered, the entries are presented alphabetically.

As you can see below, on the left hand page there is a black and white image of the card and a quote. On the right, the page is headed by a card logo of sorts that is unique to each card, followed by the card title, three keywords, the card meaning, and an intention.

Since this deck is called Earthly Souls and Spirits Moon Oracle it stands to reason that some of the card meanings incorporate information about moon names, moon phases and moon rituals.

“Success” includes information about how to synchronise with the moon cycles to increase your success. This entry also includes two Full Moon Rituals: Making Moon Water & Full Moon Alter. You don’t need to align with these approaches to gain benefit from this deck though.

I like the quotes. The quote for the “Goddess” card reads, “Every stage of life lays the foundation for the next stage of life. Treasure each stage of life.” Then, the meaning asks you to consider what comes to mind when you think of the Triple Moon Goddess. For this entry she provides keywords for each phase of the Triple Goddess along with the associated moon phase. The information for the card wraps up with this intention:

“Magic runs deeply through your veins, be wild and free. Awaken your soul and embrace all of your journeys around the sun, whether they are traditional or all your own shining uniqueness. We are all warrior women.”

I love this.

Wrapping it all up

Earthly Souls and Spirits Moon Oracle encourages you to tune into your intuition and focus your intentions. Add in Terri Foss’s artwork and you have a stunning deck that is sure to appeal to anyone drawn to nature-inspired oracles with witchy vibes.

Mel! It’s so fantastic to see a new entry from you and to hear your writing voice 🙂 Earlier in the fall, I knew I wanted to have a fall-centric oracle (and as I don’t use oracle decks that often, I was only choosing one). I was in the horns of a dilemma about purchasing this deck or the Solitary Witch Oracle. They both had a similar feel in my opinion. I ended up choosing the Solitary Witch, but now seeing this artwork, I could easily have chosen this route. I think these images and this art style may lend it to more intuitive readings. Her artwork is stunning, and I immediately went to her IG page to watch some process videos.

Though I am not usually a big oracle person, I have also obtained a few others that I’ve been really enjoying lately: Supra Oracle, Starlore Arcana, Materia Prima, and the Dark Goddess Tarot (that I use more as an oracle). It’s been fun to add these layers to my readings.

We need to have a deck/practice catchup and see where we’ve been this past while. I hope you’re well.

Also, you mentioned going to a service soon: I am sorry for your loss, and I hope that the memorial provides some healing. ❤️

Hi Shaney, Thank you. I just went and had a look at the Solitary Witch Oracle – it’s beautiful. I think the approach with the keywords creates the difference. I’m looking to explore that idea further by comparing the two oracles created using Dan May’s artwork. I might look into the Solitary Witch and this deck as well as part of this. I largely ignore keywords on tarot but I find they influence my thinking with oracles so I’m going to try approaching them in both ways to see what happens.

I’ll send you an email soon with my latest decks and what I’ve been working with. Bee Tarot will be my next review. Thanks for reaching out. I’m all good. Hope you are too.
