    Tarot of the Abyss

I’d been interested in adding a black and white deck to my collection without actually actively looking for one and then I saw this while watching Scorched Earth Tarot on YouTube. I became more and more drawn into Ana Tourian’s renderings of the cards. The Tarot of the Abyss is a Rider Waite Smith based deck so the meanings depicted are familiar. But many of the images are highly original conceptualisations. When I went through the deck I initially picked out way too many cards to photograph (says a lot about this deck straight up). So, to cull them down, I generally selected cards that differ from the usual renditions.…

  • A tarot card titled The Hierophant from the Haindl Tarot shows a mystical figure with a long beard, surrounded by light and symbols, set against a blue and gold background. Deck Review is written above the card.

    Haindl Tarot

This evocative deck combines many different elements into a cohesive whole. Abounding in symbolism and drawing on different esoteric and religious traditions, the Haindl Tarot offers so much. I thought I’d like it; I didn’t expect to love it. It’s completely different to anything else I’ve worked with. It’s not a Rider Waite Smith or a Thoth clone, but from what I see I would say it’s definitely Thoth inspired. I’d add that it’s mythologically inspired too since that’s what drew me to it in the first place. The Haindl Tarot Deck Hmmm, where to begin? In a deck that incorporates so many aspects what do you give priority too?…

  • A tarot card from the Spiritsong Tarot titled 19. THE SUN features a vibrant hummingbird flying near a radiant sun, with golden rays and blooming flowers below. The words Vitality and Joy are written at the bottom.

    Spiritsong Tarot

The Spiritsong Tarot is an entirely animal-based Tarot deck. There’s not a person to be found and yet these are very approachable cards that I find easy to read intuitively. To be honest, I wasn’t sure that would be the case when I bought them, so I was pleasantly surprised. The Spiritsong Tarot melds the idea of animals as spiritual helpers with the tarot system. The choices made for each card merges “each animals unique power with classic tarot practices.” These choices are then rendered in detailed, watercolour images that are beautiful to look at. The colour palette is soft and muted and yet still quite alive. They really are…

  • A tarot card labeled 0. CHOICE from the Dreams of Gaia Tarot features two faces, three doorways, a flowing stream, and a snake in a tree with an apple. The glowing, mystical background sets the scene for this captivating Deck Review.

    Dreams of Gaia Tarot

Ravynne Phelan has moved away from the typical tarot structure. Dreams of Gaia Tarot is a non-traditional elemental-based tarot deck that includes some additional Major Arcana cards and a different approach to the Tarot court. The changes may initially feel challenging but it’s an easy deck to work with once you connect with the creator’s approach and the thinking behind it. Then, you can immerse yourself in the incredible images and uncover some powerful new insights. This is a very healing deck, which makes sense since the aim of these cards is to help people “to seek, to feel, to grow, to heal.” The Dreams of Gaia Tarot Deck The…

  • A card from the Cook's Tarot, the Five of Pentacles shows a child in a yellow raincoat reaching out in the rain, standing next to an adult outside a colorful shop filled with jars and goods.

    The Cook’s Tarot

This easily relatable deck is perfect for those wanting to tune into themselves and what’s going on in their day to day lives. The Cook’s Tarot is a bright contemporary deck that depicts everyday household scenes, many of which as the name implies revolve around food and the kitchen. The idea is that since the imagery is largely familiar, it’s easy to bring your own life experiences into the interpretations. The Cook’s Tarot Deck The 78 gouache paintings that make-up this deck took 6 years to create. This isn’t just a quick throw together to target a particular market. It’s a well thought out deck. I have used these cards…

  • A tarot card from the Llewellyn Tarot titled Wheel of Fortune features a woman in a red robe seated beside a glowing, intricate wheel with Celtic designs. The card has ornate borders and the word Arianrhod at the top.

    The Llewellyn Tarot

Imagine a traditional deck inspired by medieval Wales and you have the Llewellyn Tarot. The stunning watercolour artwork depicts Welsh settings, characters and mythology and is worth owning purely for its beauty. I’m surprised it has taken me this long to acquire it, especially since my Mum was Welsh. But, better late than never. Maybe it’s just time now. Another deck, The Universal Celtic Tarot, encouraged me to start studying world mythologies. This deck with its Welsh-mythology-driven Major Arcana fits in well with this. So if you’re into beautiful artwork, great guide books, and/or mythology, and you don’t already have it, this deck could definitely be for you. The Llewellyn…

    The Wild Unknown Archetypes

To be honest I really don’t know where to begin with these cards because they are so different to anything else I have worked with. What I can say is that I have experienced some profound personal revelations whilst working with these cards. They strike deep into the essence of what is known and yet often hidden which is incredibly powerful. The information I uncovered when using The Wild Unknown Archetypes felt like I had always known it yet never given it the attention it needed and deserved. If pushed I would say this is an all encompassing deck that is beyond simple definition. The Wild Unknown Archetypes Deck As…

  • A vintage-style Housewives Tarot card titled The Hanged Man shows a smiling woman in an apron holding laundry; a miniature man hangs upside down by his foot from a clothesline she is pinning.

    The Housewives Tarot

When I first saw this deck there was something about it I loved straight up. But, I thought it would be more a deck for my collection rather than one I would seriously use. That’s not the case. It has some powerful messages to share in a way that is incredibly relatable. This isn’t just a kitschy deck with no substance. It’s true The Housewives Tarot is full of humour but underneath the laughs is a serious message. To me, this deck is the stand-up comedian of the Tarot world. The Housewives Tarot Deck Before I get onto the cards themselves, I have to comment on the packaging. I love…

  • A tarot card from the Connolly Tarot labeled XVIII The Moon shows a man in purple standing and a woman in pink sitting by water under a glowing yellow moon, with a castle and trees in the background.

    Connolly Tarot

As the box says, this bright, yet subdued, tarot deck created by the mother and son team, Peter Paul Connolly and Eileen Connolly, is “reminiscent of medieval stained glass.” The artwork is full of rich, royal purples, emerald greens, pinks ranging from soft dusty tones to bright magentas, deep blues, aquas and teals, and golden yellows. The Connolly Tarot is a really pretty Rider Waite inspired deck. The Connolly Tarot Deck Like every deck this one will not appeal to everyone. Some people are critical of what they perceive to be the overly gentle nature of these cards. I don’t find this an issue. It isn’t as if the deck…

  • A tarot card from the Magick of You Oracle titled Translucence: Love the darkness shows a woman with long hair riding a large black crow through a mystical, foggy forest. The image has an ethereal, dreamlike quality.

    Magick of You Oracle

Fiona Horne, the creator, opens the guidebook, “The Magick of You Oracle is a viewing glass for the bigger picture in life – for those times when you ‘can’t see the wood for the trees’ and need perspective. For those drawn to the artwork they can certainly do that. Whilst they are associated with witchcraft, you don’t need to be a practicing witch or even into witchcraft to gain benefit from these cards. If the artwork appeals to you then these are for you. The dark colouring might not be for everyone – a very dear friend of mine absolutely loves it, my daughter not so much – me, I…
