5 ways to use tarot cards for writing

I have an English degree but that’s not to say I only used tarot for my creative writing tasks. Tarot helped me with my sociology and history academic essays as well. That might sound a tad strange but it’s true nevertheless. Tarot can help with and inspire ideas for all forms of writing. Though as a writing aid for creative writing it excels. These are the five suggestions covered in this post: So let’s get started. 1. To get you over a “where to now?” moment As someone who writes daily, I have found tarot great for getting me over the “where to now” moments. This applies whether I’ve been…

    Getting to know The Hermit

I see The Hermit in many ways however I don’t really associate him with the “dark night of the soul” that I’ve heard others suggest. At his core, for me he represents going within to uncover and discover the inner wisdom we all possess. Wisdom that develops when we integrate knowledge with experience, hindsight, and our core values. It’s The Hermit that encourages us to spend time alone in order to connect with ourselves and reflect upon our thoughts, actions and beliefs. For me, he defines the philosophy of the Into the Lonely Woods oracle. Sometimes, I would suggest more often than we allow ourselves, we need to spend some…

Taking a look at The Hierophant

When it comes to highlighting tarot cards, The Hierophant may seem like a strange choice, but, that is the very reason I chose to start with this card. I feel many people aren’t a huge fan of The Hierophant because of how it’s represented in some decks. That’s a real shame because there is so much wisdom to be gained through a deep dive, hey even a shallow dive, into the messages contained within. Barbara Moore writes of The Hierophant in Tarot In Wonderland: The Hierophant doesn’t represent how to think as to the importance of what to think.’ She adds, ‘What we accept as the “truth” about the world…

Why I don’t like asking the tarot yes/no questions

The short answer to why I don’t like yes/no tarot questions is that I find them disempowering. The slightly longer answer is that in asking the cards whether I should or shouldn’t do something, or whether something will or won’t happen the way I want it to, gives the cards an extreme amount of power over me. I love tarot cards but I don’t use them to tell me what to do. To do so is a dangerous practice. I don’t believe the cards should rule my life. Nor do I believe that’s their purpose. I believe they can be used to guide us, enlighten us, encourage us, inspire us,…

Why email Tarot readings are a great option

Imagine opening an email and rather than seeing someone trying to sell you something or another email from the boss, you saw insights into a situation that has been bothering you. That’s one of the many benefits of email readings. We communicate via email and in written form in general now because it crosses distance barriers and because it ensures that those involved have something tangible to refer back to. This for me is the greatest benefit of tarot readings delivered via email. All the information is laid out in front of you and you can take it in as, and when, you are ready. Research shows that we can…

Combine tarot and journaling to edit your life story

Our lives are a series of stories. That’s not to say that they progress along an individual story arc, nor that they go to the plan we may have in our head. In reality we live multiple stories at any given time. That would be way too complicated if we were to try and capture them in a single novel or memoir. No-one would be able to follow that! After all, characters we consider “real” in books don’t share the mind blowing number of thoughts most of us have swimming around in our heads at any given moment. As I write these initial few lines, my mind is considering whether…

However, I really believe journaling can be a mindful practice as well because it also brings awareness to where you are now. Plus the benefits of meditation and journaling are very similar. Here’s a far from exhaustive list of the benefits of journaling: Journaling can: boost your mood enhance your sense of well being reduce symptoms of depression reduce intrusion and avoidance symptoms after trauma improve your working memory help you to accept your emotions help you to manage stress strengthen you immune system lower…
